carry 40ft containers, but not as a regular operation, the British Trailer Co. Ltd. has introduced this extensible skeletal semi-trailer which has a basic chassis 20ft long, a 10ft extension which is permanently in place to give 30ft overall, and a maximum length when extended of 40ft.

The basic chassis has ISO corner locks for two 10ft or a single 20ft container, but when fully extended the trailer will take a 40ft: or a 30ft and a 10ft; or two 20ft; or a 20ft and two 10ft units, with ISO locks to suit.

The main fixed frame is a 16in-deep I-beam, with rollers along the inner side of the frame to permit smooth extension and retraction. The 10in. rolled I-section frame of the extending portion is locked by four spring-loaded pins housed in tubular guides.
