• Grants have finally been made, following the B licence applications by Mendips tipper operators to the Western Licensing Authority in February (CM Feb. 23).
(0 To Linham and Sons Ltd.. one additional plated tipper of 6 tons will be granted with conditions "Quarried materials and tarrnacadam (excluding goods forJohnWainwright and Co. Ltd. within a radius of 150 miles."
Iii) To H. J. Steeds, one additional tipper of 6 tons will be granted with conditions "Roadstone and tarmaeadam (excluding goods for John Wainwright and Co. Ltd.) within a radius of 120 miles."
OW To M. R. Meggs. a B licence for one tipper of 4 tons 19 cwt will be granted with conditions "Roadmaking materials and quarried materials (excluding goods for John Wainwright and Co. Ltd.) within a radius of 125 miles."
(iv) To P. J. Cooper, one additional tipper of 5 tom 19 cwt will be granted with conditions -Quarried materials and tarmacadam (excluding goods for Limmer and Trinidad Co. Ltd. and goods forJohnWainwiight and Co. Ltd.) within a radius of 150 miles."
Ivl To Fl. F. W, Cook, if the applicant so wishes, a B licence for one vehicle will be granted with conditions "Building materials and excavated spoil for Ft. Biddiscombe of Bruton and Stickland of Frame within a radius of 50 miles." If that offer is not acceptable to the applicant. the application will be refused.
In reply to Mr. T. Corpe's submission that "it would be dangerous to license additional facilities until things have settled down", Mr. Samuel-Gibbon contended that to suggest that it would not be right to license any further vehicles until he knew that all existing vehicles were doing on average at least 50,000 miles per annum (the figure which the Mendips quarry owners and tipper operators had decided was the minimum a tipper could cover economically) "would be to invert the statutory onus of proof and also to give the 50,000 figure a sanctity which could not be justified."
