Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Roanna Amon AN EXTENSION of the Quick Moveable Barrier (QMB) and more funding for an existing truckstop are a better solution to Kent's lorry parking problems. rather than Kent County Council's (KCC) proposal for a 70-acre truck park, says Ashford Borough Council leader Paul Clockie.

Clockie believes creating a huge truckstop near Adlington, between junctions 10 and 11 on the M20, is not the answer. "There is a need for truck parking in Kent, but taking trucks off the motorway during Operation Stack into this 70-acre site will be a logistical nightmare. It will mean building a new junction.

"I think it would make more sense to extend the QMB, so it could be used on the 13-mile stretch between junctions 8 and 9 We could also provide portable toilets and mobile food outlets for the drivers to use while they are stacked," insistsClockie.

To counter the lack of truck parking in Kent, Clockie suggests giving the existing truckstop at junction 10 £2m to expand.

Geoff Dossetter, external affairs director at the Freight Transport Association, says there is a need for more lorry parking in Kent and KCC's suggestion of one large site to cater for general overnight parking and Operation Stack traffic makes sense.

The Road Haulage Association's head of international affairs, Peter Cullum, believes the QMB will not help Kent's lack of truck parking, while the 70-acre site will go some way to addressing both problems. "We think KCC's proposal seems a reasonable way of meeting the demands for overnight secure truck parking and somewhere to put trucks during Operation Stack," he says.

KCC was unavailable for comment as Commercial Motor went to press.
