Oxford plans LEZ and weight limits to restrict lorry traffic

COUNCILLORS IN Oxfordshire plan to introduce a low-emission zone (LEZ) and restrict lorry movements by introducing weight limits in an effort to tackle mounting congestion.

As CMwent to press, the council could not comment on whether the move would be modelled on London's LEZ, but Councillor Ian Hudspeth, the council's cabinet member for transport, says: "We are considering ways of alleviating traffic congestion while also improving air quality."

The proposal succeeds a selection of HGV defects discovered In the area. Lorries were found overladen, and 26% of the HGVs stopped in the town had mechanical defects, with problems including tachograph operation offences and faulty or a lack of brake lights. Hudspeth adds: "Chipping Norton was never built to cope with the amount of traffic on its roads."

The proposals will be included in an Air Quality Action Plan for the town, which the council will submit to the Government later in the year. The council has set aside money for the restrictions in 2009-2010.
