CM goes windows shopping at Daf dealership Chatfields to see what's on offer.

Every fortnight we will be dropping into a dealership to see what they have on the forecourt in the way of used vehicles. Our first guinea pig is affiliated Daf dealership Chatfields, and its used vehicles sales manager Peter Murphy.

Chatfields in Leeds is a CD Bramall corn pany with satellite dealerships in Manchester, Sheffield and Darlington. The Leeds depot employs 110 people including mechanics, managers and administrative staff. It sells new and used vehicles, and has work, repair and spray shops. It also has an LDV franchise incorporating used vans. Murphy heads up the Leeds and Sheffield branch, and is responsible for buying and selling. "We have quite a mixture of vehicles between 7.5 and 44 tonnes, although last month we had a good mix of high-spec 6x2 tractors," he said.

Customers come from far and wide, so to make sure their trips are not wasted Murphy tends to understate the quality of his trucks rather than praise them too highly. That way customer expectation is not artificially high.

Stock

By and large, the vehicles come in via buybacks, lease and part-exchange packages, and there are around 25 in stock at any one time.

The current range at Leeds has plenty of two-axle rigids with box and Luton bodies, with a sprinkling of fleet tractors_ Priced at £23,000 (plus VAT) is W133 OSW, a Daf 85 CF 430 6x2 mid-lift tractor with a sky cab. It comes with 600,000km on the clock from a Scottish operator and has a full repair and maintenance history from new. It has an air operated fifth wheel slider with air conditioning, raised bunk and electric windows. It is clean outide and in.

There's also a Daf FA65CF210 18-tonner with sleeper cab. Registered in 2000, it's an ex-lease vehicle with a 28ft curtainsider body and rear column tail-lift, priced at £23,000.
