TWO TRUCKS have been temporarily suspended from a five-truck fleet after a DeputyTraffic Conunissioner expressed horror at a haulier's "appalling" test record. Dukinfield operator Christopher Noble was hauled before North Western DTC Elizabeth Perrett after an anonymous complaint led to a VI swoop. She told him:"! am horrified at the way things have been allowed to slip for four years."

Vehicle examiner Colin Brown said that he had examined four vehicles and one trailer, issuing two delayed prohibition notices. When the vehicles Oven the prohibition notices were presented for clearance, they were found to have serious brake defects.

Vehicles and trailers had been presented for annual test in unsatisfactory condition on various occasions, with brakes, steering and suspension faults —one trailer being presented with serious brake defects on three occasions. Managing director Christopher Noble told the inquiry that there had been no problems until the company's mechanic retired in 1999. Because of the VI's findings, he immediately dismissed the new mechanic, who he said had been submitting vehicles for test to find out what was wrong with them. He also told the inquiry the two drivers employed at the time were also dismissed "to ensure a clean and compliant fresh start".

Cutting the licence from five vehicles and four trailers to three vehicles and two trailers for a period of two months. the DTC said that the company had an appalling annual test record.
