Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A "fill and drain" gas main sealant service has been introduced by A.M.G. Zuurbier Ltd, of Doncaster, Yorks., using a fleet of self-contained road tankers /compressor units built by Yewco (Yorkshire Engineering and Welding Co Ltd).

The Zuurbier service includes the location of underground mains, and the detection and sealing of any bas leakages. These are sealed internally by means of Shell CF 16 sealant—a bitumen emulsion. The sealant is pumped into the faulty main and pressurized over a given period of time. Under pressure. it automatically gravitates to the point of leakage and seals it MT. The rest of the sealant is then pumped out of the mains back onto the road tanker for re-use.

Four Yewco tankers have already gone into operation on this service. Two of them are 4000gal models fitted with compressor units and powered by Ford D1000 chassis operating at 28 tons gvw. Another 4000gal tanker is powered by a Scammell Trunker chassis at 32 tons gvw. and a 1000gal model is in use with a Ford D700 rigid chassis at 11 tons gvw.

Of particular interest are the two 4000gal machines. These are designed as integral vehicles with their own 12 bhp diesel compressor. units to provide pressure discharge at 30 psi and vacuum filling. With a 26 ft. outer axle-spread wheelbase, they have a four-axle articulated chassis with tandem axle rear bogie. They carry cylindrical single-compartment tanks fitted with interior baffles and twin nianlids (one to facilitate cleaning when necessary). Built of i4sin. mild steel with +in. thick end-plates, the tanks are insulated by 3in. glassfibre with an 18 gauge polished aluminium outer shell.

Yewco—an associate of London and Northern Securities Ltd—is based at Friars Works, Bradford Road, Idle, Bradford, Yorks.
