Keywords : Bus

A COMPLETE fleet of one-man

operated buses including' doubledeckers; on-the-spot penalties for passengers who exceed their paid-for travelling distance or avoid payment of fares; multi-journey tickets to be sold at shops and agencies on a commission basis for the shops and at a lower price than the normal fare for the passenger; electronic ticket-cancelling machines on one-man buses so that drivers would not have to handle pre-sold tickets; and an intensified campaign for reserved -bus lanes— these are among sweeping proposals reported to be due for consideration by Manchester Corporation's transport committee at its next meeting.

The proposals are in a report by a three-man delegation, headed by the transport committee chairman, Alderman A. Logan, which spent to weeks studying Continental undertakings.

The Manchester branch of the T.G.W.U. told The Commercial Motor on Wednesday that they had not seen copies of the proposals but that if reports of the contents were correct then they

did not seem practicable "at this stage ".

Although the controversial report was not considered at Tuesday's meeting of the transport committee, the committee did consider the survey on "Rapid Transport in Large Cities" by Mr. A. F. Neal, general manager. The committee is to press for reserved bus lanes to he included in the planned extension into .VIanehester's city centre of one of the city's main arteries, Princes S Road.

The survey (detailed in The Commercial Motor, August 21) stressed the need for the Segregation of public transport. The committee decided that the survey should be forwarded for the special consideration of the city's highway, road safety, planning and traffic congestion committees and the traffic management unit.

Adding weight to its endorsement of the report, the transport committee recommends that consideration should be given to public transport on Princess ,Road as a matter of urgency. It would be a key route for both local and express bus services.
