THERE NEEDS TO be a joinedup, multifaceted approach to improving cycle safety that includes driver and cyclist training, additional safety equipment on vehicles and improved junction design, a Freight Transport Association (FTA) fringe meeting at the Conservative party conference in Birmingham heard this week.
FTA MD of policy James Hookham said the fragmented approach by major construction clients such as Transport for London (TfL) and Crossrail to the adoption of additional safety equipment, such as side guards and extra mirrors, was causing consternation among members. TfL is urging all London boroughs to adopt similar requirements.
“Some of these modifications, such as fitting strobe lights, conflict with the requirements of the annual test and do not meet EU lighting regulations,” Hookham said.
