IF ELECTED, the Conservatives would review the 40mph speed limit on single-carriageway A-roads, introduce lorry road user charging and seek to address the issue of overnight parking for drivers.
Speaking at the RHA Lunch this week, Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers said that while the Tories would not offer rebates on VED or fuel duty, a number of other issues would be reviewed. "I guarantee that foreign trucks will pay their fair share of tax, wherever they come from," she said. "We will look to introduce lorry road user charging. If the Germans can do it, then so can we."
She also outlined how a Conservative government would seek to tackle congestion hotspots to improve road capacity and did not rule out a future road-building programme.
Regarding the 40mph limit, she said: "It's high time it was reviewed. There is a strong case for raising the speed limit to 50mph."
