• UK bus companies should expand abroad to escape troughs in the British market, Stagecoach boss Brian Souter has told a conference of transport managers.
Souter has built up Stagecoach from a longdistance express coach operation to an international operation with interests in the Far East and Africa in just over 10 years. He told the Chartered Institute of Transport in Hove of massive revenue increases in Malawi, where Stagecoach has replaced its subsidiary's single-deckers with double-deckers.
Changing from eight singledeckers on a 7.5-minute frequency to 12 double-deckers every five minutes has boosted income by 80%, said Souter. Stagecoach inherited 230 vehicles when it bought the Malawi operation 16 months ago; it now runs 370.
