— according to his bosses at South Yorkshire Transport — in the way he dealt with a fire which flared up in the engine compartment of his bus while driving a "load" of 11 to 14year-olds to Gosforth School, Dronfield, near Sheffield.
Glancing in his mirror when his bus began to lose power, he saw clouds of smoke billowing from the engine compartment; raced to the back of the bus; saw flames and immediately ushered the kids to safety.
Driver Jenkins tackled the blaze with his fire extinguisher, but firemen turned up to finish the job off for him, and the kids were eventually delivered to school in a relief bus.
