• Lon-y drivers should have at least 12 hours rest a day and get a 48-hour break at weekends, senior Transport & General Works Union negotiator Larry Smith urged Last week.
Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Blackpool he claimed the proposed changes in drivers hours had been imposed on Britain by the EEC despite the opposition of the TUC and the European Parliament.
He called for the next Labour Government to draw up new regulations taking everything into account and include as well as a maximum 12-hour working day, a 45minute meal break.
"We need a commitment on this vitally important issue," he said.
