• New Department of Transport figures suggest that the introduction of the 38tonne weight limit saved British hauliers around 250 million in 1985. By the end of last year there were 26,000 38tonne trucks on Britain's roads, accounting for 51/2% of stock, but responsible for 28% of freight moved by road in 1985. The Department estimates that 5,000 fewer vehicles were required on Britain's roads last year as the result of the weight limit increase.
