Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

More M40 • It was announced last week that the go-ahead has been given to construct the next stage of the M40. It is an 18km (11 mile) section that joins the M42 south of Solihull and runs south-east down to Warwick, where it will link with the A46. Construction should start in the middle of next year and be completed two years later.

Stretches of the missing section between the existing end near Oxford and this new one are to go to public inquiry in a few weeks time.

Scottish plans • Speaking at the Scottish dinner of the RHA last week, the Minister for Industry and Home Affairs at the Scottish Office, Ian Lang, outlined some of the future major road schemes in Scotland. They include:

LI An estuary crossing to take the A9 across Dornoch Firth, cutting journey times into the Highlands — proposals invited.

i] Continuation in the up-grading of the Perth-DundeeAberdeen route (A85/A92). Li Southward extension of the M74 in Strathclyde — opening very shortly.

El Northward extension of the M74 in Glasgow — planned. n Eastward extension of the M8 to the Edinburgh Outer City Bypass — proposed. El M80 Stepps bypass North East of Glasgow — construction to begin when funds available.

LI More spending on structural repair work of existing trunk roads.
