Dereg -guide • The Transport Act 1985 comes into force on October 26, bringing with it deregulation and more open competi tion in the bus industry.

Your Guide to the 1985 Transport Act explains the Act, clause by clause, with information on the law applied to competition. It also includes useful addresses.

Haulage data

• Finance house Lloyds Bowmaker, which operates Road Haulage Association Financial Services for the RHA, is offering a free Road Haulage Data File booklet to anybody in the industry.

The 40-page pocket booklet contains statistics on the haulage industry including vehicle registrations, traffic, length of haul and tonnes moved. It also has general economic data like population figures and employment information.

Drivers' book • A new drivers' guide book has been published by the Freight Transport Association. The 74-page Drivers' Handbook is primarily concerned with the laws that concern the truck driver, including the new hours regulations, details of the recently-introduced fixed penalty tickets, loading/unloading and tachographs.

Kids' staff

U The Freight Transport Association has published a 19-page booklet that, says FTA planning director Richard Turner, "aims to get the message across to young people that life as we know it would not survive without freight transport."

Brake maintenance

• Available from MOT test stations is a booklet that aims to help operators maintain their trailers' braking systems properly.

It is published jointly by Rubery Owen-Rockwell and the Freight Transport Association and includes maintenance and preparation of trailer brakes for the annual test. Tyres, anti-lock and load-sensing systems are covered. The 20-page booklet Trailer Braking — Guide to Effective Maintenance is free of charge at the test stations.
