• Brittany Ferries is looking to extend its freight services on the new Portsmouth to Caen service next year with the introduction of the 2,750tonne, all-freight Breizh-lzel, which is currently used as standby on the company's other routes.
Freight sales manager Gor don Day predicts that the Brittany Ferries Truckline subsidiary will carry around 100,000 freight vehicles on the Portsmouth to Caen route before the end of the year, and says that new capacity, in the shape of the Breizh-lzel, may be necessary.
Currently, Brittany Ferries operates the 9,367 tonnes gross Due de Normandie on the five-and-a-half hour crossing from Portsmouth to Caen (Ouistreham), a new terminal operated by Caen Chamber of Commerce and built at a total cost of £800,000 on a site about 11km from the city centre.
