Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A synchronised splitter mechanism, which will give smoother, quieter splitter shifts, has been introduced on the Spicer SST 8010, 1310 and 1410, ten-speed, constantmesh gearboxes, as used on Leyland and Scammell Roadtrains.

The change has been made in response to continued criticism of the ratcheting noise which frequently accompanied splitter shifts on the SST gearboxes which were always supplied with a simple dog clutch splitter mechanism.

Spicer has developed a new, narrow profile synchroniser for the splitter which will be on display at next week's Motor Show. Two other new developments from the Dana subsidiary will also be on display at the NEC.

The 15-250, five-speed synchromesh gearbox, used by Renault Truck Industries, and by Leyland on the Roadrunner, has also had its torque capacity increased to 393Nm (290 lb/ft) and has been redesignated the T5-290.

Torque capacity has been increased by widening the face width of the main and countershaft gears. The T5350 is a new, uprated derivative of the T5-300, fivespeed synchromesh gearbox fitted to some Bedford TLs and Leyland's export-only truck, the Comet. Spicer says its durability has been improved and its torque capacity uprated.
