BY 1990 computers in vehicles will be common, the SMMT believes. Typical information that such instruments might give includes average or "spot" fuel consumption, estimated time of arrival, time, date and temperature. It could, I am assured, even remind the driver of his wedding anniversary. Long-distance tourcoach drivers might find it useful to be reminded of the names of their wives.
A computer would have been invaluable to a Blackpool Corporation bus conductor whom I attested when he joined the army. He had five children but he could not remember the name or age of any of them. I have often wondered how he coped with the fare table.
