HEAVIER lorries should not come to London until the Greater London Council is assured that they will be more environmentally acceptable. So said GLC leader Sir Horace Cutler last week.
Sir Horace was speaking at a local government meeting in Munich, and said: "Enormous juggernaut lorries thundering through the capital on unsuitable roads are a major concern. We must resist any moves towards larger and heavier lorries until and unless we have assurances about their environmental effects."
And he continued: "I know that this is now a matter under consideration at international level. I am determined that our voice will be heard, We will continue to press our own Government, and members of the European Parliament for regulations requiring less noisy and cleaner commercial vehicles.'
But he did offer a note of consolation for operators, saying: "I do recognise the economic arguments for bigger lorries. Freight services are a major element of the London economic and employment scene.
"They are important factors in attracting and retaining trade and industry, so we aim to encourage their efficiency at the same time as we lessen their environmental impact."
