EACH showtime brings forth new models. Most are natural developments of established ideas while others adopt innovations.
In the trailer and bodywork sections, vehicle designers are forever striving to produce larger payload capacities at lower unladen weights, which give immediate access for loading and discharge.
Wadham Stringer (Victory) Ltd A newcomer to the Commercial Motor Show will be Wadham Stringer (Victory) Ltd, a Portsmouth bodywork manufacturer.
Its exhibit, chosen from its Victory III range of bodies for refrigerated retail delivery and built for conveying palletised dairy foods, will be based on a Bedford TL1000 chassis cab.
The vehicle incorporates an interior sealed box of grp-faced plywood, framed and skinned with aluminium which results in a strong lightweight body.
Foamed polyurethane insulation is completed in situ to a depth of 7.2 6cm (3in) throughout.
Marine grade plywood is overlaid with five bar pattern aluminium welded into a single piece tray. Double-side and fullwidth triple rear doors provide ample access.
A Petter HY200 hydraulic refrigeration unit is driven from a gearbox pto and has 220/240v electric standby for overnight use.

AHP Trailers AHP Trailers of Wolverhampton has widened its horizons since the last Show, adding a range of step-frame chassis for tanker application to its regular range of coil carriers, step frames and tipper chassis as well as subframes and running gear for tanker manufacturers.
This year it will be showing a dual-purpose skeletal trailer with a tandem axle which can be used either for standard application or for tipping operation in conjunction with a tipping container.
Besides this a dual-purpose skeletal coil carrier is said to have the advantage of being lighter than a conventional coil carrier, while for normal container traffic there will be a 7.46m (24ft 6in) tandem axle ske letal trailer which can accept a single 6m (20ft) container.
An example of a typical tandem axle running gear on subframe as supplied to leading manufacturers will also be shown.

Lawrence David To accommodate different sizes of load and different loading methods, Lawrence David Ltd, St. Peter's House, Peterborough, has devised a quick-release roof support called the Bendi Pillar that can be positioned either on the centre line or at the Trac-Cess curtainsided body's outer edge.
It is captive to the roof but able to slide sideways on a tube —incorporating a lockable knee-joint, and a base which locates in a floor slot.
Once positioned, the pillar is locked rigid by a simple catch at the middle.
Two pillars are fitted on a standard 12m (40ft) trailer; the slots at the edge of the trailer are located on opposite sides for each pillar, so that they are in staggered formation.
Transfer of pillar position is very quick and effortless, since the pillar does not have to be lifted, just pushed across.
In the centre position, the pillars allow full end-to-end side access. When positioned at the sides they allow unobstructed across-body access for loading from the back.
The curtain-lifting mechanism of the Roller-Sider is operated by an electric motor. Controls on this electric version can be positioned on the front bulkhead or under the side rave, according to customer preference.
In common with manuallyoperated Roller-Skiers, the electric version has curtains which lift up clear of the cant rail, allowing full-height side access for high-stacked pallets. Yet when small articles need to be unloaded, the curtain need only be partly lifted.
Since the curtains take up none of the body width, the full 2.5m (8ft 21/2in) loading space is available to allow metric pallets to be stacked two abreast.

Marsden
Marsden's new-styled integral cab for pantechnicon van bodywork claim its small radius cor
ners, panels and new roof section will help to reduce wind drag and subsequently improve overall running costs. A moulded grp cab fairing, incorporating a spoiler, is fitted to increase streamlining.
Engine access is accommodated by hinged doors each side enabling walk-in inspection, and inside the integral cab has been extended to provide two full-width sleeper bunks.
The body, a composite construction, reinforced and gusseted at stress points, provides internal dimensions of 7.9 x 2.3 x 2.7m (26ft x 7ft Bin x 9ft) mounted on a Bedford KG 4.2m (167in) wheelbase chassis with a 1.37m (54in) inter-wheelbase extension. The completed vehicle is plated at 12.35 tons gvw. Neville Charrold will be sho ing its Ultralite tipping bodywc in standard and insulated fon plus two trailers from its extE sive Big N trailer range.
A non-tipper trailer is the fii of its kind to be manufactured Charrold's and is aimed operators who transport bul commodities (sawdust, ref and so on).
Having a 50cum (65cuyd) b capacity steel body shell with ternal dimensions of 10.€ (35ft) long x 2.1m (7ft) high, t load can be dispersed in a m ter of three minutes by a "I floor". An enormous cha conveyor is driven by means o hydraulic motor and an epicyc gearbox. The non-tipper is said to have advantages over a standard tipping semi-trailer, including complete security, no risk of rolling, better access onto sites, a maximum body length of 12m (40ft) plus 61 cum (80 cuyd) maximum capacity for bulk commodities, and no problems with tipper ram seals.

Coachworks Conversions A new model to be unveiled at the Show by Coachwork Conversions of Colne, Lancashire, is the Maxibox which supersedes its former Freightbox body range suitable for chassis up to 7,5 tonne gvw.
Z-section aluminium extrusion will be employed for the 'chassis' longitudinal runners with cross-members attached at different intervals depending on the floor materials used.
Deep rub-tails contribute to the robust specification, and a new bolted galvanised steel rear frame gives greater resistance to lozenging.
Construction facilities allow for body lengths up to 7.3m (24ft).
In June this year Coachworks introduced its steel tipper range for up to 3.5 tonne gvw and this will be presented at the Show mounted on a MAN-VW LT35D chassis in conjunction with Telehoist FR12 tipping gear.

Welford Truck Bodies Welford Truck Bodies will return this year with a selection of bodies, trailers and hydraulic truck loaders, but new to the Show is the Welford-Pesci P1000 hydraulic truck loader rated 8000kg at 2m (6.56ft) radius with a fully hydraulic jib which extends to Bm (19.7ft).

Southfields Coachworks Ltd.
A curtain sided 12.2m (40ft) dose-coupled tandem-axled semi-trailer has been designed specifically for the soft drink and brewery trade by Southfields Coachworks of Loughborough.
A front-end air deflector has a 305mm (12in) curvature. Curtains with both horizontal and vertical welded polyester webbing straps, self-lubricating steel roller hangers, horizontal ratchet tensioners for front and rear end are all features claimed to be unique to Southfields.
An interior cargo control system will also be on display in this vehicle.
For urban multidrop delivery work on a rigid chassis a Southfields curtainside will give the advantages of fast-opening sides, easy operation and versatility of usage. The Spidertilt tilt bodywork will be of interest to operators engaged in TIR work.

Rubery Owen (Pressings & Fabrications) Ltd.
On view for the first time in the UK, a vehicle underride protection unit will be manufactured and marketed to the automotive industry by Rubery Owen and will eventually meet the demands of commercial vehicles with gvws from 3.5 tonnes to 32 tonnes.
It has been successfully tested in accordance with directive 79/490/EEC, and conforms to the directive on dimensions and load requirements for ten-tonne applications (gvws of between 16 and 32 tonnes).
Designed as a maintenancefree assembly that is welded onto the vehicle's rear subframe, it is essentially an underrun protection shield, which provides for energy absorption with controlled deflection by the use of torsion bar mechanisms.
In the event of a tail-end collision, the energy released on impact is transferred from the underrun protection shield to the torsion-bar mechanism, from which the shield is suspended.
The underrun shield deflects and, following impact, returns to its normal position.

Aeroquip A pioneer in cargo control equipment, Aeroquip, will have a new range of ratchet buckles which meets the strength requirements of the 10,000lb classes of load retention strap. A cadmium-plated casting gives exterior use protection and a specially engineered long handle and ten-tooth ratchet allows maximum tension to be exerted easily and efficiently.

Unitox
To be shown for the first time will be the Unitox range of portable catalytic exhaust cleaners. Moving vehicles in confined spaces, such as workshops and loading bays, has always presented pollution problems, which Unitox claims to solve by burning the exhaust gas in the .presence of a preheated catalyst even while the vehicle is in motion, so converting piosonous carbon monoxide to harmless carbon dioxide.
Units are available to suit all types of vehicle. By attaching the vehicle before starting up, the unit stays active long enough to manoeuvre into position in the loading bay or workshop.
