FIVE NEW employees have been taken on by the National Bus Company in the NorthEast as a result of a scheme to recruit extra staff by offering housing accommodation. NBC has asked several local authorities for help and this has proved successful in Washington New Town, Co. Durham. The five new recruits have signed a twoyear contract which states
that they are liable for damages of £50 if they leave the company within that period.
In Chester-le-Street there is a driver shortage of 70 but the local authority has decided not to offer busmen houses because of the outcrN it would cause among other people awaiting council homes in the town.
