THE Marseilles Port Authority, which holds waste-disposal contracts for the whole of the Marseilles dock area, last year called in the services of a British made refuse-compacting system.
Until then the volume of waste originating in the docks, some 60,000 cu rn, used to be removed by a fleet of multibucket trucks at a cost of 5.48 francs per cum.
The new British equipment, an Anchorpac P-40, compacted last year's figure, reducing the original figure to 20,000cu m.
The system has an extremely large (60 x 42 ins) leading "mouth", which easily takes in bulky objects. It also features a 40-ton raw thrust, and comprises many built-in safety devices.
Under the previous system Marseilles dock workers had to make 10,000 multibucket truck discharges to do away with the annual 60,000cum of waste; now only 800 trips are necessary.
