LAND OF OPPORTUNITY D ETURNING from a 35,000-mile l•business visit to South Africa, Mr. Ewart Guy, director of Guy Motors, Ltd., is convinced that the Union offers first-class opportunities to young men of talent and enthusiasm.
" The one great factor hampering industrial development in South Africa," said Mr. Guy in an interview, "is the acute shortage of European supervision of the great mass of native unskilled labour."
Mr. Guy made a close personal study of the needs and problems of transport undertakings in the Union. He found that, whilst municipal services were fully up to European standards, road-transport conditions outside the towns were chaotic.
Unmade or semi-made roads, the troubles arising from dust and reflected heat, and, above all, the appalling standards of driving and maintenance among native transport workers, cause great waste of equipment and constitute a serious barrier to industrial development.
