MANCHESTER'S BAN ON FREE TRAVEL FOR THE FORCES

NAANCHESTER City. Council has alnow 'decided not to grant special concessions by way of free travel or reduced fares to uniformed members of the Forces using its municipal buses and trams, A special joint committee, established to consider the question, submitted a report turning down the proposal to grant the concessions. The chairman of the jointcommittee emphasized that the report was a unanimous finding and that the question was not a local one, but should be dealt with on a national basis.

NOTTINGHAM BUYS TROLLEY. BUSES FROM CLEETHORPES

ACleethorpe's war-time needs are not so great as they were in normal times, the corporation has been able to sell four trolleybuses to Nottingham Corporation. They will certainly be welcome at Nottingham, where they will be of considerable help in meeting the requirements of the transport department. The most recent additions to Nottingham's trolleybus fleet were made in 1935 and, as the Cleethorpes vehicles were built in 1937 and 1938, they will constitute the lace city's most

modern trolleybuses. They are fourwheelers, contrasted with Nottingham's six-wheelers, and seat 56 persons.

SCOTTISH STATION SERVICE TAKEN OVER

THE bus service which has been run by John Paterson (Motors), Ltd., between Auchterarder and Gleneagles Station for the past 16 years was due to be withdrawn as from October 2, and passengers were facing the prospect of being compelled to make individual arrangements for their transport to and from the station. This has been obviated, however, by Auchterarder Motors, Ltd., taking over the service which, subject possibly to a few minor adjustments, will be run as formerly.

TOWN GAS A SUCCESS AT SOUTH SHIELDS

EXPERIMENTS with a single-deck gas-bag bus at South Shields are proving successful. At present, one vehicle only is running on town gas, but it is expected that five more singledeckers will be converted The experimental bus is running on workmen's services from the shipyards, but when the tests are complete the gas'-bag has may, as a type, become a part of the municipality's regular transport system.

BUS SEASONS COST MORE AT GLASGOW

WEEKLY season tickets on Glasgow Corporation bus services are to be increased from 3s. to 3s. 6d. per Week, and restricted to a total of 28 journeys, two return trips each day. The corporation transport committee was informed, on October 2, that the Regional Traffic Commissioner has approved the corporation's application to make the increase.

The application was for a restriction to 28 journeys per week, but not necessarily to four single journeys per day. It was.made because of a deficit last year of about £80,000 on the running of the buses. It is estimated that the increase in the price of tickets will bring in an additional revenue amounting to approximately £25,000 per annum,

HELMETS FOR LONDON'S BUS DRIVE RS

AN order has been placed by London Transport for 36,000 protective helmets for drivers and conductors of buses, trolleybuses and trams, and other road staff in the employ of the Board. It is said that the helmets are light and can be worn with the minimum of discomfort.
