In a broadcast. speech which he made on October 3, the Minister of Transport said that the total number of victims of road usage for the year to date is 4,700 killed and 104,000 injured—one casualty every three minutes. During the 28 weeks in which the speed limit has been in operation, the number of persona killed in towns where, generally speaking, it is in force, has fallen by 22 per cent., or more than twice as. much as the percentage in county areas, where it is generally not in force, Since a driving test became compulsory for new licence holders, 120,000 applicants have presented themselves mid, of these, 16,000 have failed.
In the autumn of last year, 10,000 pedestrian crossings were established in London and, during the past six months, there has been a reduction of 28 per cent. in the number of persons killed, as compared with 12 per cent. for the rest of the country. The Minister said that other towns and cities are now in the course of installing about 13,000 crossings.
C.M.U.A. Midland Campaign Starts.
The Commercial Motor Users Association has opened a new campaign in the West Midland Area by inaugurating a branch at Coventry. This action was taken at a meeting, last week, when Mr. S. Macadam presided, supported by Mr. J. Howell, secretary of the West Midland area of the C.M.U.A., and Mr. J. L. Kinder, national organizer. At a further meeting in Coventry, this week, a committee was appointed. Mr. Hornby . (Messrs. Hornby Bros., Co,ventry) is secretary, for the time being.
This development was followed up on Wednesday by a meeting at Stourbridge, to open a new branch, when Messrs. Macadam, Howell and Kinder again attended_ As foreshadowed in The Commercial Molar, the C.M.U.A. opened branches, last week, at Whitchurch and Wrexham.
