THE petrol-electric vehicle is proving very popular for passenger work, and three of these machines will be exhibited at the Show by Tilling:Stevens Motors, Ltd. The petrol-electric vehicle differs from the ordinary gear-driven chiefly in its unique system of transmission, and visitors will be able carefully to examine -this, es there will be a 4 ten chassis on view. This is the T54 type with a four-cylinder engine, q in. bore and 6 in. stroke. This is coupled to, a powerful dynamo through the medium of twin laminated springs. There is no direct connection between the engine and

the wheels, the dynamo transmitting its power through insulated cables to an electric motor positioned immediately behind it, this motor being coupled directly to the rear road wheels through the medium of a cardan shaft and overhead worm gear.

There is no gearbox and, therefore, no gear changing, the necessary torque being obtained electrically. The principal dimensions Of this chassis are : Wheelbase 14 ft. 6 ins., overall length 24 ft. 6 ins., and capacity 4 ton, or from 30-57 passengers, according to the type of 'body required The next, exhibit will be a double-deck omnibus on a, petrol-electric cha.sais.with accommodation for 48 passengers, of whom 22 can be seated inside and 26 on the upper deck. The stairway is made extra wide to facilitate speedy exit and entrance, and careful attention has been paid to interior ventilation and seating in order to ensure the comfort of the . passengers.
