Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Scammell and Nephew, Ltd., Fashion Street, London, E.

Stand No. 76. I T. is rather doubtful which of the two

vehicles to be exhibited at Olympia by G. Scammell a-nd Nephew, Ltd., will prove the' more interesting. One is a 2,000 gallon -oil-fuel tank wagon, built to the order of Shell-Mex, Ltd., and the Other is a pantechnicon van with hotly 27 ft. long. Adequately to. describe the two vehicles it will be necessary to give .11 brief resume of the main construetioied features. of the Scammell six-wheeler. The complete vehicle consists of a tractor carrying a turntable on its rear end. Pivoted on a pin secured to the centre of this. turntable is the front end of a trailer, the rear lend of which is carried on a. stout axle provided with two twin rubber-tyred wheels. The turntable is mounted on halfelliptic springs clipped direct to the rear axleof the tractor, whilst the weight of the tractor is carried on comparatively light underslung springs. The drive is taken through a Ferodofaced internal cone clutch and a clutch shaft with two star type universal joints, to a gearbox giving three forward speeds and a reverse, and thence by. a beveldriven jack shaft and roller chains to the. tractor wheels. The chains ;tie adjusted by means of light cast-steel radius rods, provided with screwed phosphorbroaze adjusting sleeves.

The tank has. vertical sides and is rounded at the front end, whilst the roof is slightly cambered to give extra strength. At-the back is a 'pumping set, consisting of a two-cylieder 7 h.p. Kelvin marine motor, fitted with a reversing gear. This engine operates an Albany 1908 special type gear pump, a }reedy flexible-disc joint being disposed between the engine and the pump.

To reduce the consistency of the oil, the main exhaust pipe is passed through the tank, and the tank containing the 'cooling water for the pumping engine is positioned inside the fuel-oil tank. • The pantechnicon body. is 7 ft. -6 ins. -wide and 7 ft. high, the. loading 'and unloading being done— through large double doors at the side.
