Stand No. 34.
TIAREE -vehicles will eomprisethe Show models of Caledon Motors, Ltd. The first of these is a 40-seater single-deck bus, similar to that which was exhibited at the Glasgow Show last January. It is of the oyertype, 'with the driver' sitting alongside the engine, and is arranged with the entrance and exit door at the centre of the near side.
The second vehicle is a standard S.E. type chassis, specially ;designed with worm drive for passenger work on founton loads.
The last exhibit is of particular interest. It is a.n.overtype vehicle, which allows an 18 ft. platform, which can he extended by 2 ft., if necessary, and still keep within a reasonable overhang. The load capacity of this machine is 7 tons, and particular attention has been paid to the obtaining of a low loading level, the height to the top of the chassis with normal load being 33 ins. The outstanding feature on all the chassis is the Burt-McCollum single sleeve-valve engine, which is giving remarkable results, and for which fuel economy of 25 per cent. is claimed. The single sleeve has a peculiar rotary and reciprocating motion, which tends to improve the balance; and which allows the sleeve to be effectually lubricated. The 'external appearance of the engine is remarkably clean, and the water pump and magneto being situated across the front, are quite accessible. The bore and stroke are 110 mm.. and 140 mm.
respectively. The water circulation is by centrifugal pump. The timing gears are driven by a silent chain, whilst skew gears are used for the cross drive. The oil pump is of the plunger type, and is worked from an eccentric on the sleeve shaft.
The power unit is three-point suspended in the chassis.
