AK WORTHINGTON has submitted an appli cation to increase the null] tier of trailers it is authorised to run at its facility in Westbrook Road, Trafford Park, Manchester, to 120, The application follows the announcement by the company that it is investing £750.000 in 40 new Lawrence David trailers.
The new trailers are half a metre taller than others in its fleet, meaning the overall capacity of each one is 20% bigger.
AK Worthington believes they will be ideal for customers wishing to transport more light freight such as packaging, clothing, furnishings and paper products.
The company says it expects to see the UK economy continue to grow over the next year. and that the new equipment will ensure it is in a position to offer its new and existing customers "greater flexibility to transport more of their goods".
Julian Richards, MD at AK Worthington, says: "This is a major investment at a time when many other transport firms still have concerns about the economy. I believe, however, that to stay competitive it is important to invest in the latest technology to provide the best possible service for customers."
AK Worthington says during the past year it has purchased more fuel-efficient trucks, increased driver training and spent £150,000 on new IT systems.
It plans a further investment of about £750,000 in its vehicle fleet early in 2011.
