Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• United Carriers drivers are threatening to strike in the runup to Christmas unless the company explains a controversial memo that details plans to sack employees "through the back door".

Douglas Curtis of the United Road Transport Union says he is still awaiting the outcome of an investigation into the matter by United Carriers human resources director Ron Smith.

Curtis has called a meeting of the national committee. which includes members from URTU and the Transport & General Workers Union, to

decide on any action. "If they haven't done something positive they could face a shut-down just before Christmas or the millennium," he warns.

In the memo, leaked to Commercial Motor last week. United Carriers' security manager Ian Martin writes: "If we have a suspect driver and cannot get him through detection, then invariably he will fall foul of this little "catch-alland we can then dispense with his services through the back door."

United Carriers was unavailable for comment.
