• The Department of Transport is to add traffic calming measures for the first time to a major trunk road to test if the initiative can be adopted elsewhere.
The A47 will be the test site for a range of schemes including narrow sections, chicanes, gateway features and a 20mph variable speed limit through Thorney in Cambridgeshire from next year.
The Road Haulage Association is concerned that future schemes may be used with the sole purpose of prohibiting trucks. RHA infrastructure controller Mike Freeman is meeting the DOT next week to ensure that traffic calming is used only to improve road safety.
Freeman is also concerned that local authorities may use unnecessary schemes on smaller roads, after being given more power this summer to impose traffic calming without DOT approval.
