THE hearing of the application by the HE

Pool operators, Yorkshire Traction Co. Ltd., East Midland Motor Services Ltd., West Yorkshire Motor Services Ltd., East Yorkshire Motor Services Ltd., Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co. Ltd., Yellowways Motor Services Ltd., Hobble Motor Services Ltd., Wallace Arnold Tours Ltd., J. W. Kitchin Ltd., and Associated Motorways was resumed at Leeds on Wednesday before the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners.

It was the tenth day of the hearing, adjourned from April I, and a further five days have been allocated.

The Pool operators seek a new daily express service between Keighley and Cheltenham, there to connect with the services of the companies comprising Associated Motorways operating to and from destinations in South Wales and the south and west of England. Linked through-coach operations in conjuction with Associated Motorways are also provided. The towns to be served en route to Cheltenham are— Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Barnsley, Sheffield and Chesterfield.

Additionally sought is a Friday and Saturday, May to September express service, KeighleyPaignton via Cheltenham, with feeder services from Halifax and Leeds serving towns en route to Wakefield, there to connect with the main service. These weekend journeys will also provide connectional facilities at Cheltenham with the

Associated Motorways network and at Exeter with the Royal Blue and Devon General services.

If the applications are granted three existing licences are to be surrendered—Wallace Arnold Tours Ltd., Leeds-Paignton; J. W. Kitchin and Sons, Bradford—Torquay; and Hebble Motor Services Ltd., Bradford—Rochdale. The objectors are British Railways, Hansons Buses Ltd., C. G. Litdewood Ltd., Heaps Stores Ltd., Sheffield United Tours Ltd., and Ellen Smith (Tours) Ltd.

Continuing his cross-examination of Mr. R. Roberts, traffic manager, Yorkshire Traction, Mr. M. H. Jackson-Lipkin, for four independent objectors, asked if any agreement had been reached on amending the application in respect of the 1,400 destinations which could be served under these applications. Mr. Roberts indicated the Pool operators would have no objection to being restricted to Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Ilfracombe, Weston-Super-Mare, Weymouth, Paignton, Minehead, Exmouth, Plymouth, Newquay, Penzance, Falmouth and St. Ives.

Mr. F. D. Walker, for the Pool operators, said the application could be amended provided the 13 towns indicated were regarded as destination towns and that it was understood the Pool operators were now seeking linked services along those routes from and to Cheltenham and Exeter.

Mr. Roberts gave it as his experience that traffic from the North to Birmingham and London over the last two years was about the same but some coastal services were fractionally down.
