A BREAKDOWN of the number of spot checks

carried out since 1962—and of their results —was given in the Commons last week by Mr. Stephen Swingler, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport.

He said that starting with the year ending September 30 1962, the number of vehicles examined over 12-month periods was 97,067; 86,451; 117,746; 139,428; and 119,810.

Immediate prohibition notices had totalled 8,107; 8.037; 11,178; 14,017; and 13,420, while the number of licences revoked had been 5 (involving 11 vehicles); 13(43 vehicles); 9(18); 6(8); and 15 (71). Suspended or curtailed licences had been 23 (30 vehicles): 19 (30); 22 (46); 140 (232); and 160 (691).

Mr. Swingler added that though information for the year ending September 30 1966 was not yet available, the number of goods vehicles licensed during the earlier four years was: A:89,500; 91,000; 93,000: and 95,000. Contract A: 29,000; 30,000; 33,000; and 34,000. B: 74,000; 77,000; 82,000; and 85,000. C: 1,226,000; 1,278,000; 1,312,000; and 1,319,000.
