AN award to employees of provincial bus companies is expected to be made soon by the arbitration board set up to settle the differences in the pay dispute between the two sides of the National Council for the Omnibus Industry. Both the employers' and the employees' representatives submitted their cases to the tribunal on Monday.

Manchester City Council last week approved unanimously a resolution supporting the demand of employees of the transport department for an immediate increase in wages.

Employees of Walsall Transport Department have accepted an offer of an extra 10s. a week made by the transport committee. The award, which was submitted for the approval of the National Joint Industrial Council yesterday, is retrospective to October 31, and is additional to any national increase.

Cllr. F. Thickett, chairman of the committee, said last week that the award would lead to higher fares. " Bearing in mind what is being sought nationally, we may have to make quite a substantial application."

The London Transport Executive and the Transport and General Workers' Union have announced officially that agreement has been reached on proposals for higher pay and revised conditions of employment (The Commercial Motor last week). Staff recruitment improved materially while the settlement was being discussed, the L.T.E stated.

Coach drivers employed by operators covered by the South-Western Joint Industrial Council have had their pay for full Sunday work increased by 5s. Until last week-end, the rate for a full day's work on a Sunday was £1 10s.

New rates of pay and conditions of employment for coach drivers have been framed by Plymouth Co-operative Society. Drivers on day tours will receive £1 9s. 8d. a day for any six days worked from May 1 to September 30, whilst drivers on extended tours of two or more days' &ration will be entitled to £1 12s. 5d. a day.

During the "close season" (October 1—April 30), permanent drivers will be paid £7 9s. 6d. a week, with an extra 5s. for work after midnight. When he is employed on day duties during this period, the driver out for more than four hours will be paid a food allowance of Is. 6d. when he is not less than 10 and not more than 20 miles from the garage, and 2s. 6d. when he is more than 20 miles away.

Day-and-a-half rates, plus a day in lieu, will be paid in respect of Bank Holidays worked, and diy-and-aquarter rates for Sundays.

Overnight expenses will be £1 7s. 6d. in the holiday season and £1 in the "close season" (£1 10s. in Scotland).
