DEVELOPMENTS ensuring greater efficiency and longer life have been made by component manufacturers since the Scottish Show of 1953, whilst the fertility of ideas of accessory makers has not diminished. This can be confirmed by a tour of the " gallery " stands at Kelvin Hall. Because of space limitations, some exhibitors have found it difficult to provide as ambitious -a display as they would have liked, but all can . give the operator useful knowledge on the latest techniques to improve economy.
A new range of high-performance, thin-plate batteries is featured by CAN., Ltd., Warple Way, London, W.3, on .• Stand 178. Porous-rubber .separators with glass-wool pads are, attached to each positive plate.
Recently introduced Dagenite TPG and PGB batteries are exhibited by Holsun Batteries, Ltd., Aurs Road, ,:Barfrhead "Glasgow (Stand 187). The TPG series is suitable
. ,
. for.goOds vehieles, whilst the PGB types have been designed , for, passenger vehicles in which . a. lightweight highperformance battery is required. • Battery Economy Advanced features of new Lucas batteries have enabled reductions in weight, space and price to be effected. On Stand 165, Joseph Lucas; Ltd., Great King Street, Birmingham, show passengerand goods-vehicle batteries with positive grids east in a special metal resistant to corrosion, and glass-fibre packing between the porous-rubber separators and the positive plates. M.T. types are supplied in
• moulded caSes tested to 60,000v.; and W.T. types are assembled in stained and waxed hard-oak crates.
The Corripany have also produced a dynamo which is slightly larger than normal models and has an output of 30 amps. This unit is intended for Vehicles with equipment such is two-way radio, involving an electrical load higher • than usual.
An electrically operated windscreen washer is another . Lucas innovation. It is operated by a push-button on the instrument-panel which, when depressed, causes two streams of water to play against the windscreen for some 7 sec. The -glass container holds about a quart-sufficient for 30 operationS. Known as the Screenjet, the washer is simple to fit andrequires no special cleansing fluids or solvents. Methylated spirit may be added to the water to prevent freezing in winter. .
„ Longer Plug Life Platinum-pointed sparking plugs are shown by K.L.G. Sparking Plugs, Ltd., 50 Oxgate Lane, London, N.W.2 (Stand 164). The heat range of such types of plug is about double that of a .normal kind with nickel-alloy central electrodes, and other advantages are longer life and improved performance• at the extremes of engine-speed range.
The company also show a new waterproof plug cover made of beat-resistant toughened rubber.
Lodge Plugs, Ltd., Rugby, have also a range of platinumpointed plugs on display on Stand 179. To give greater protection, the electrodes of Lodge plugs are coated with chromium by a special.process.
Of moulded-asbestos composition, the new MS.3 facing material made by Ferodo, Ltd., Chapel-en-le-Frith (Stand 170), is claimed to have a high friction value and particularly good anti-squeal and anti-grab characteristics.
Capasco H.F.7 extreme-duty non-fade" material is shown on Stand 181 by the Cape Asbestos Co., Ltd., 217 Bothwell Stieet, Glasgow, C.2. The company also exhibit rubber-moulded brake-facing material in flexible-strip. form.
The latest Lockheed braking system, of the leadingand trailing-shoe type, may be inspected on Stand 175, occupied by the Automotive Products Co., Ltd., Leamington Spa. Each wheel has only one cylinder in which the piston for the trailing shoe is larger than that for the leading shoe, to compensate for the trailing shoe's lack of self.-energizing effect. This arrangement is stated to provide a brake which is extremely stable under all operating conditions. There is fully automatic adjustment for facing wear. A small vacuum booster is placed between the master cylinder and the brakes to increase operating pressure. The servo effect is proportional to pedal effort.
On Stand 174, the Borg and Beek Co., Ltd., Leamington Spa, show examples of new strap-drive clutches for highperformance engines. The drive to the pressure plate is by a series of tangential spring-steel straps. which deflect when the clutch is released without disturbing the concentricity of the pressure plate. Accurate balance is retained throughout the full travel.
A wing mirror with a spring-return mounting, known as the Boomerang, is exhibited by Desmo, Ltd., Scholfield Street, Birmingham, 7 (Stand 215). With a flat glass it costs £1 Is. 6d., or with a convex glass, £1 2s. 6d.
Wingard (M.A.), Ltd., Chichester, Sussex § display on. Stand 190 a new version of their telescopic mirror for commercial vehicles, also a reversing lamp of attractive design.
A combined washing and polishing preparation, known as Bowes Seal-Fast Bond polish, is displayed by Automotive Parts and Accessories, Hailsham, Sussex, on Stand 137. Sold in liquid form at 5s. 10d, per 16 oz, bottle, or in bulk,. Bond polish may be added to washing water, and it is claimed that when dry the cleaned surface has a polish as good as that which may he obtained after three separate operations of washing, cleaning and polishing.
Maximum traction in forward or in reverse is afforded by the 'Winter Safety tyre, a new product of Avon India Rubber Co., Ltd., Meiksharn (Stand 202). It is available for 13-in. and 15-in.
wheels. The company are also showing their Express Delivery tyres for multi stop vans.
A new product of the India Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., 92 John Bright Street, Birmingham, is the Rufway: tyre. It. can be seen on Stand 195. Available in giant sizes, this cover is designed for vehicles operating on rough, loose surfaces, or those running on winding, heavily-cambered roads.
U.S. Royal tyres are being shown for the first time in Scotland by the North British Rubber Co., Ltd., Edinburgh, 3, on Stand 199.
The recently introduced Highway and Roadster tyres of the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd„ 48-60 North Wallace Street, Glasgow, may be inspected on Stand 166, together with the Weathermaster, which is available in smaller sizes for lighter types of vehicle.
New products of Pirelli, Ltd., Euston Road, London, N.W.1 (Stand 161), include a tubeless tyre, a cover designed to combat excessive wear sometimes caused by independent front suspension, and the Light Truck tyre for delivery vehicles up to 30-cwt. capacity.
