R.H.A. FIGHTING HARDER FOR FREEDOM

"WE are fighting for the professon of the free haulier as we have never fought before," said Mr. Frank F. Fowler, vice-chairman of the Road Haulage Association. at a dinnerdance of the Metropolitan Southern sub-area, on Monday.

Mr. Fowler stated that he was one Of a committee Comprising members of the Road. Haulage Executive and representatives of free hauliers which conferred over matters of contention between The two sides of the industry. "I would like to tell you that we have had some success," he said. "However, 1 cannot, but I shall see that hauliers will never have to give up their birthright for a mess of pot ta ge

This point was also made by Mr. A. R. Holder, who said that hauliers could run more freely if not so much "hot air" were directed at them They should determine that their right to carry on their businesses should not be completely denied them.

AREA USERS' COMMITTEES DEMANDED QHEFFIELD Chamber of Commerce s.-.) has protested to the Minister ef Transport against the, decision not to set up area transport users' consultative committees for goods traffic under the Transport Act, until area road passenger transport schemes have been made. Asking for reconsideratio.n of the decision, the Sheffield Chamber, says that chambers of commerce and trade have. expressed 'a desire that South Yorkshire and North-east Derbyshire should be recognized at once to he served by a transport users' consultstiVe.comminee for goods traffic.

PETROL TRANSPORT RULES CHANGED DEGULATION 13 (2) (b) of the Petroleum Spirit (Conveyance) Regulations has been amended to provide that the driver of a vehicle carrying petroleum spirit may be regarded as a person attending it "while in, or in close proximity to, the vehicle," instead of "while present With the Vehicle."

The permissible voltage for the lighting systems of Petrol-carrying vehicles has been increased from 16 to 24.

These changes ate made in the Petroleum-Spirit (Conveyance) Regulations, 1949, which came into force on November 1.

BENCH DEMANDS; BRAKES ON WATER CARTS A COURT decision that may involve Pilocal authorities in heavy expense in providing brake equipment for watei carts towed by lorries, was given in a reserved jUdgment at Sheffield on November 3.

James Cropper, of Bromley, Wortley, near Sheffield, Who at the time in question was in charge of a lorry towing a water cart, owned by West Riding County Council, was fined £1 for driving the lorry plus the water cart when notin a position to operate brakes on the trailer. The driver's employer, Ernest Thorpe, of The Garage.' Thurgoland, near Sheffield. was fined £1 for per milting the offence.

"The Bench is satisfied th.at the defendants did. nothing more than is commonly being done throughout the West Riding," said the presiding magistrate, Mr. W. W. Ward. in announcing the fines.

The decision is reported to affect about 150 water carts 'owned by West Riding County Council.

DEATH OF MR. G. E. FERMAN WE much regret to announce the yy death, on November 6, at the age of SI, of MR. GEORGE ERNEST PERMAN. He retired in 1937 from the position of general manager of Temple Press Ltd. He had been associated with Mr. Edmund Danger,field, the founder of the company, for 47 yearsointil. the latter's retirement in -1913 and, subsequently, with his son, Mr. Roland E. Dangerfield. the present chairman and managing director.
