Ratepayers Resist In the Northern Area, action by the South Shields rent and ratepayers' association, reported in "The Commercial Motor" last week, has been followed by a meeting of representatives of rent, and ratepayers' associations. from Gateshead, Newcastle, Durham and South Shields. It was decided to submit to the individual associations a plan which will afford opportunity for protest by petition against nationalization in the area.

Delegates agreed that this move should apply particularly in cases where municipal bodies have expressed approval of nationalization. The •council also submits that indication should be given of when national policy would enter into the co-ordination scheme.

Northumberland County Council has now instructed its parliamentary .committee to oppose the scheme.

Following the suggestion of the Association of Municipal Corporations, Halifax Town Council is to send a draft scheme for the nationalization of road passenger transport in the North-eastern area to the Minister of Transport. At a recent council meeting, objections to the principle of one form of State transport subsidizing another and remote control of local services were endorsed.
