• All London traffic signs on major routes are to be replaced following a DTp finding that two thirds of drivers lose their way when venturing off familiar roads. A sixth of signs give inaccurate or misleading information, and timewasting caused by poor signposting in the capital costs up to 235 million a year.
Robert Hardy, head of highways and traffic at the AA, took part in the DTp survey and concludes that: "Route signing in London is currently in a dreadful mess."
All primary route signs within the M25 will be replaced over three months in 1991 at a cost of 210 million. A paper given at the recent Chartered Institute of Transport conference Combating Congestion warned that 40% of London trunk road signs have basic design faults, and 14% are damaged, vandalised or worn out.
