• After nearly a year of service trials with a Neoplan Metroliner bus, BVG of Berlin has ordered 23 of the advanced PSVs.
The first models, due for delivery next spring, will incorporate changes indicated by service operation and rigorous tests of the pre-production prototypes in the Algerian desert and north of the Arctic Circle. However, the concept of using a carbon fibre composite bodyshell into which mountings for drive line and axles are integrated will be retained.
The Neoplan development, on single tyres all round, provides a weight reduction of almost 30% over a conventional vehicle of similar capacity, permitting a smaller, lighter engine to be used and giving claimed fuel and tyre savings.
Neoplan will be exhibiting further derivatives of the carbon fibre bus at the Frankfurt Motor Show, including a midi. The company will also be laun The completed body shell of a pre-production vehicle at Neoplan's plant in Stuttgart. Different versions of the lightweight, low-floor bus will be included in the Neoplan exhibit at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
