Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• BP is introducing a new type of tanker into its fleet which is claimed to be considerably more stable than existing designs.

The Lowmax tanker was developed jointly by BP and Charles Roberts Engineering of Wakefield. It is 10.3% lower than Charles Roberts' conventional tanker design, and is 6% lower than the Daimler-Benz TOPAS design.

The lower centre of gravity improves the tanker's stability and reduces its wind resistance. The 36,000-litre tank is made of aluminium alloy.

The rear of the tanker is fitted with a combined bumper and underrun bar for greater strength, and carries extra high-level tail and brake lights.

So far, three of the tankers have entered service with BP in the oil company's new livery. For more details, see Bodybuilder in next week's CM.
