BRITISH road accident casualties rose last year by one per cent from 348,000 to 351,000.
Of these, deaths — defined by the international measure of within 30 days of an accident — rose by four per cent to 6,900.
Overall, road accident deaths have dropped since 1972, when 7,800 were killed. This is the first time since then that there has been an increase.
In 1972, the figure for all casualties stood at 360,000.
