ONDON TRANSPORT is sposing of a number of its ahnler Fleetline rear-engined mble-deck buses.

Several have already been )1d to South Yorkshire reakers, but these are mainly on-runners and vehicles preiously cannibalised to overome previous spare parts hortages, or those suffering .om accident damage.

LT is currently recertifying ome of its Fleetlines for Luther service and is conidering selling a number of even-year-old buses as runers with expired or nearly expired certificates of fitness.

London Transport had a fleet of 2646 Leyland Fleetlines built between 1971 and 1978. LT has always believed that off-the-peg buses such as the Fleetlines do not meet the London's rigorous operating conditions in the way that a purpose-designed LT bus such as the Routemaster can.

The Fleetlines currently due for recertification or disposal are mainly Park Royal-bodied vehicles, although some have Metro-Cammell Weymann bodies.

Most of the early LT Fleetlines are fitted with Gardner 6 LXB engines with fully automatic four-speed gear boxes.

London Transport is also experiencing problems with its fleet of Scania-powered Metropolitan double-deckers delivered in 1976/7 and ordered when DMS delivery was delayed due to a transfer of chassis production from Coventry to Leyland.

Problems with the MD type, as the Metropolitan is designated in the LT fleet, are such that the Metropolitan is now said to be more unreliable, than the DMS type.

Already a number of MDtype buses are off the road at the two operating garages and have been cannibalised for spare parts.
