ANEW lightweight trolley-head has been developed by Mr. F. J. Cunuder, deputy general manager and engineer of Cardiff Corporation Transport Department. Weighing less than 4 lb., it has been found to be much less prone to dewirement than the standard type.

Considerable experimental work has been carried out on this invention at the Roath depot, followed by installation on vehicles. At first this was on a small scale but it is understood that about half the fleet is now so equipped.

Examples of the new device have been sent to the municipal .trolleybus systems at Bournemouth and Walsall and it is to be demonstrated at the M.P.T.A. electric traction committee's meeting at Cardiff in July. The Cardiff ,trolleybuses are scheduled for replacement by buses during the next 10 years, but this new development has caused some local speculation as to the possibility of a reprieve.

Buses for Indonesia

A THIRD gift of 50 Leyland diesel

engined buses is to be made by the Australian Government to Indonesia under the Colombo Plan. The contract —valued at .£1155,000—has again been placed with the Australian headquarters of Leyland Motors, Ltd. All the new buses will be underfloor-engined Tiger Cub models.

Normally supplied for buses with 30-1t.-long bodies, the chassis on this occasion will be built to a special wheelbase of 14 ft. 8 in. for a 27-ft. 6-in. body. This reduced length is necessary to meet overall length and axle load limitations for Class 2 roads in Indonesia.

Units of the chassis will be shipped by Leyland to their Australian headquarters where the chassis will be assembled with the incorporation of a number of Australian-made components and other special features. All-metal bodies on the new Tiger Cubs will be built by Ansair Pty., Ltd., in Melbourne. Designed for city service work in Djakarta, they will have seats for 37 passengers.
