Road Transport Federation the itish Standards Institution is to prepare Standard for automotive diesel engines. committee is now being formed, with r. A. M. Conybeare of B.S.I. as its eretary, and among the bodies who have en, or are being, invited to nominate presentatives are the S.M.M.T., 1.C.E.M.A., I.R.T.E., the, R.A.C. and, course, N.R.T.F. The latter body will

represented by Mr. J. T. Turner, [airman of the vehicles committee, Mr. . Bingley of the R.H.A. and Mr. H. 13. dllips and Mr. C. Reid for the T.R.T.A. The new Standard is expected to follow c same general lines as the existing S. 649 (non-propulsive diesel engines) and B.S. 765 (spark-ignition engines), though its prime object will be the elimination of dark smoke in diesel exhaust emission, It will set out to achieve this by establishing engineering and performance standards, including an agreed method of arriving at and stating, for example, power and torque figures, output variations with altitude, and fuel consumption.

In an article in The Commercial Motor of April 13, Mr. J. T. Turner made the suggestion that standards be laid down for several important aspects of diesel engine performance and diesel fuel characteristics. This article will provide one of the starting points for the committee's study of the subject, and copies will be circulated to members.
