It is asked that the provisions of the Income Tax Bill making allowances on new industrial buildings' should be extendedto motor-vehicle repair workshops, as the efficient maintenance of the Nation's road transport is vital to the country's industrial efficiency. It is pointed out that repair workshops of transport undertakings are already eligible.

EX-SERVICE MEN'S LICENSING POSITION UESTIONS regarding the withdrawal of war-time licences and the position of members of the Forces wishing to resume their transport businesses, were asked by Mr. WoodbAn last week in the House of Commons. Mr.. Woodburn wanted to know how the post-war situation would be affected in consequence of a war-time operator having extended his organization.

In his written reply, Mr. Noel-Baker, Parliamentary Secretary, M.O.W.T., said that Regional Transport Commissioners were now reviewing the need for the additional haulage vehicles which had been authorized during the war.

He said that the continuance of the defence permits for these vehicles would depend on the requirements of the traffic to be moved. As already announced, if a member of the Forces held a licence at the beginning of the war to operate goods vehicles of a certain tonnage, and had not sold his business, that fact would stamd in his favour when he applies for a similar tonnage after the war.

Under the Road and Rail Traffic Act, 1933, said Mr. Noel-Baker, any person, including members of the Forces and existing hauliers who apply for licenes for new businesses or additional vehicles must satisfy the Licensing Authority as to the public need.
