FFURTHER to our recent reference, in'" Passing Comments,to six-wheeler conversion units, the American War Production Board has reduced the 1945. programme of third-axle attachments for civilian vehicles from about 6,000 to 3,500. Of this, some 1,700 will be gear driven, 470 with chain drive, and over 1,300 of the trailing type. The Automotive Division of the W.P.B. has declared that ;these attachments can increase the axle-load capacity by as much as 300 per

The materials concerned are talc, gypsum, calcite, fluorspar, apatite, feldspar, quartz, topaz, corundum and diamond. Possibilities of Facing A N interesting development Plastics with Films of r-k which has occurred in con., sandwiching of Clear plastics with glass, but. hi a different manner from that forinerly employed with the laminated type of safety glass. The latter comprised -two fairly thick sheets of high-quality glass with a thin plastic centre. The new method is to -use a thick centre of a clear plastic coated on each side with an extremely thin and, therefore, flexible sheet of glass. This glass not only prevents possible exhalation from the plastic material, but also permits the surface to be cleaned in the ordinary way without the danger of spoiling the clarity by scratching, The idea is also being employed in connection with plastic tubes, which can even be lined with thin glass firmly secfired. The Permanent Dull. pt LACKING the surface of Blacking of Stainless 1-41 stainless steel for various

is carried out, . according to a recent U.S. patent, after degreasing and drying by immersion for 15-20 minutes in a Solution of sodium dichromate at a temperature of over 615 degrees F. Occasional stirring of the solution is necessary. The parts are removed from the solution, allowed to cool and washed in warm water. The coating so produced is elastic and mechanically strong. Wire treated in this way can be drawn, and the surface resists abrasion; corrosion resistance is similar to the untreated metal and in some cases even enhanced. The high temperature forms oxides, not hydroxides, making the colour of the coating permanent and unaffected by atmospheric conditions.
