GEE'SHAULAGEhascompleted a double swoop in West Yorkshire this week with the acquisition of Dewsbury firm RW Edwards & Sons (Haulage Contractors). plus 10 trucks and tipping trailers from Upton-based Maurice Pearce.

Wakefield-based Gee's describes RW Edwards as a-well-established local business" with a "good reputation for service".

It says the firm will be merged into Gee's operation, and will provide additional volume for its curtainsider fleet. Eighteen drivers and vehicles have moved over as part of the deal. MD Andy Gee says now is the right time to buy: -We are a business looking to go forward. If you don't move with the times, you can easily get left behind.

"The acquisitions are a measure of Gee's ambition to continue the profitable growth of the business and workforce at a time of difficulty for the industry."

Gee's now has two operating areas: fridges and curtainsiders, and bulk tippers.

Gee says the decision to diversify came on the back of a management buyout last year, which helped to draft in outside expertise to the previously family-run business. New directors include Jack Hanson, who has previous experience with both Clugston Group and tipper operator R Hanson & Sons, which Hargreaves Services later acquired.

Gee adds; -1 can honestly say that if I had carried on running it by myself, I would never have looked at these opportunities.

"It means that if one part of the business goes quiet, we can move some of the assets into another."

Gee's runs 60 trucks and 100 trailers across three sites in West Yorkshire, with an E8m turnover.
