APPLICATIONS by Ribble Motor Services Ltd. for Chorley-Ringway Air, port, Clitheroe-Ringway, Fleetwood-Ringway and Skipton-Ringway licences were granted by the North Western Traffic Commissioners on Monday. The grants were for a 12-month period starting at Easter this year. A decision on a Carlisle-Ringway application was reserved.
For the applicants, Mr. F. D. Walker submitted that Chorley would be the interchange point for all the routes; they were intended solely for airport connections and not for intermediate traffic. Ribble wanted to avoid people having to travel to and from Ringway by going into the centre of Manchester and then needing to change bus stations.
Mr. Walker said that Manchester Corporation, operators of the ManchesterRingway service, were not there to object. The type of licence which Ribble sought, which did not give specified times or a timetable, was not common in the north, but had been granted in the Metropolitan area. Traffic to Manchester Airport had grown to such an extent that it was desirable for travellers to have road facilities similar to those available in and around the London area. Objecting on behalf of Happiway Tours (Manchester) Ltd. and Stanley Spencer's Tours (Manchester) Ltd., Mr. J. Backhouse said the Skipton and Carlisle applications should be heard in their respective areas. The facilities for which application was made were really excursions and tours and not express services.
At the moment, the Carlisle-Ringway application is listed for hearing by the Northern Traffic Commissioners at Barrowin-Furness on March 17.
