ACOMPLAINT was made by Mr. Lipson as to the heavy burden on the ratepayers. especially in agricultural counties, in respect of repair and improvement of unclassified roads. He suggested a contribution from the Exchequer towards the expense incurred by county councils.
Mr. Burgin said he had received representations on the matter from various quarters. • He reminded the Member that maintenance grants in respect of unclassified roads were dis. continued by the Local Government Act, 1929, being merged in the general Exchequer contribution. De had no power to restore them.
Mr. Lipson pointed out that these roads were originally constructed to carry comparatively light traffic, but were now used by heavy vehicles, and that the money allowed under the block grant was insufficient for the heavy expenditure required.
